Ask Dr. Green
Brinkerhoff
Environmental Services, Inc.
is happy to provide the services of Dr. Green to answer any questions
about environmental concerns.
Question:
How do I clean the fuzzy green mold spots and the stale smell from
my bathroom?
Dr.
Green: Use a diluted white vinegar solution for cleaning, and be sure
to wear gloves. If the spots won't come clean, an outside consultant should
be called in. Also key is keeping the area as well-ventilated as possible
at all times. Mold needs moisture to grow, so the more you can do to keep
your bathroom dry the better off you'll be in the future. Remember: Moisture
Control is Mold Control!
Question:
Is bottled water really safer than tap water, or should I be using something
like a Britta filter on tap water?
Dr.
Green: The State and Federal drinking water regulations require that
tap water delivered by a municipality must meet stringent requirements.
However, if residual chlorine, iron or other chemicals are of concern
then a Britta filter (which contains activated charcoal) can be beneficial.
With regards to bottled water, each purveyor maintains their own sampling
and testing protocols, so you may want to contact them directly for test
results to compare with safe drinking water standards.
Question: Is
it safe to grow tomato plants next to my house if the shingles are coated
with lead-based paint?
Dr.
Green: The
short answer is No, not unless you have the soil tested for lead! The
reason for this answer is due to the ability of acid rain, common to the
area, to leach from the paint. The rainwater then infiltrates the soil
and may deposit residual lead. It is very common to find elevated lead
levels along the "drip line" of homes with lead-based paint.
Chipping and peeling particles may also accumulate in this area.
